Early University Animations (2014 - 2015)

Early University Animations

After being accepted into University, I began work as a 2D Animator, experimenting with sound and movement. Further down the year, we were given the choice of specialising on a certain mode of animation; Stop Motion was an easy choice, keeping myself true to my first produced animation back in College.

Whist on the course, I’ve been taught more about lighting, movements, most importantly, timing. These three main tenets have helped me to further expand my knowledge and capabilities as an animator.

The Infestation (College Final Project - 2014)

The Infestation

With the final year of my College studies drawing to a close the task of a Final Major Project loomed large. I had to come up with an idea which reflected  my talents and creative ideas; the initial concept was to have a person isolated inside of his house from the outside world. The idea kept on changing until I was watching a documentary on the behaviour of rats and an idea began to form.

I based the animation off classic horror movie tropes, some being the sense of being watched and having an “unknown” which eventually catches up to our main character. The rats being mutated gives the story more of a horror atmosphere. The final step was thinking about how I would convey the narrative to my audience. I instantly thought about animating my story in Stop Motion, having being inspired by Aardman Animation’s Wallace and Gromit series.

The set was designed simply from cardboard and paint, the entire cast of characters including the Old Man was made out of wiring and plasticine. After presenting this animation to my peers for feedback, it was clear to me that I should further continue on an animating path. This led to me being offered a place at the University of South Wales.
